Project Five: Working In Groups Using Themes

Purpose: To further skills in the WIldScaper environment by producing scenes using different art styles.

Key Idea: Develop students skills in art using a limited colour palette, bold colours, shapes, and the interpretation of various cultural art forms. Develop english skills in story telling and structure to complement an art piece.

Outcome: A better understanding of the diversity of culture and how art has always been a communicative tool to tell stories, pass on knowledge and preserve history of a people, their land, language, beliefs and customs. Through the study of the various art forms and linking the skill of story telling and how these stories are historical records, students can improve skills in studying their own family history and the wider connections to a global community. Students will be able to write stories or poems that inform and pass on knowledge of their family and cultural history.

Assignment 5.1 - Aboriginal Art Styles, Stories And Mythology

Purpose: To further skills in the interpretation and implementation of indigenous art styles.

Key Idea: Develop students skills in art using a limited colour palette, bold colours, shapes, and the interpretation of old indigenous art forms. Develop english skills in story telling and structure to complement an art piece.

Outcome: A better understanding of our native Australians very rich and diverse culture and how art has always been a communicative tool to tell stories, pass on knowledge and preserve history of a people, their land, language, beliefs and customs. Through the study of the various art forms and linking the skill of story telling and how these stories are historical records, students can improve skills in studying their own family history and the wider connections to a global community. Students will be able to write stories or poems that inform and pass on knowledge of their family and cultural history.

Additional: This assignment is designed to get students to work in small groups to research the diverse range of Aboriginal art forms through creating their own level scenes using WildScaper. This could also involve a field trip to an Aboriginal Cultural Centre or museum to look at various Aboriginal art forms in art galleries.

  • Working as a group research Aboriginal art styles such as dot painting and line painting.
  • Study shapes and patterns of indigenous art to create a style.
  • Research and develop a story based on Aboriginal stories and mythology.
  • Determine how your story will be organised over multiple levels.
  • Create a template file for your main character.
  • Develop a level each using the same character from your template file.
  • Each student in the group will develop a scene level using Aboriginal art styles to depict the scene.
  • One of the students in each group will be selected to compile all the levels into a single game title.
  • Consider colours and line opacity settings.
  • Consider how a blank bird symbol can be used for a number of alternative characters such as insects.
  • Select an appropriate MP3 sound track using environmental or indigenous audio tracks.
  • Play and test your game level.
  • Compile a game folder for both Windows and MacOSX.
  • Save all the .wld level files to the game folder and test all levels and scoring in the game.
  • Distribute on CD-ROM, USB or via the internet and analyse audience responses.

Assignment 5.2 - Abstract Art Styles And Poetry

Purpose: To further skills from Assignment 4.1 understanding the interpretation and implementation of Abstract art styles and poetry.

Key Idea: Develop students skills in art using a large colour palette and variety of shapes, and the interpretation of abstract art styles and ideas. Develop english skills in poetry working with abstract art forms visually.

Outcome: A better understanding of the development of art movements in the 19th century in Europe and Australia. Learn how to express ideas using abstract expressions visually and in text.

Additional: This assignment is designed to get students to work individually to research the diverse range of abstract art forms through creating their own level scene using WildScaper. This could also involve a field trip to an art gallery.

  • Working individually research Abstract art styles such as cubism or post-modernism.
  • Study shapes and patterns of Abstract art to create your own style and interpretation of an environmental scene.
  • Develop an abstract main character and write a poem about the character in the scene.
  • Develop or source an MP3 sound track that enhances the character and scene in context to the poem.
  • Open the publish panel and include all required game titles, instructions, poem and set a target score.
  • Assign scores to the relevant symbols.
  • Play and test your game level.
  • Compile a game folder for both Windows and MacOSX.
  • Save the .wld level file to the game folder and test the level and scoring in the game.
  • Distribute on CD-ROM, USB or via the internet and analyse audience responses.
